normal skin type

NORMAL

Normal skin has small pores over all with slightly larger pores in the tzone (forehead, nose cheeks).  Start with a light foaming cleanser or cleansing milk and toner.  All skin requires regular exfoliation to keep it bright and clear, and normal skin benefits equally from peels and scrubs, and does well with medium weight hydrating moisturizers.  Hyaluronic acid is an ideal ingredient for normal skin because it boosts your skin’s hydration levels, making it buoyant and smooth without being too heavy.  You can find this ingredient in many serums and moisturizers.

Dry skin type

DRY

Dry skin has small invisible pores uniformly over the face giving your skin a very even texture.  The challenge with dry skin is to keep it moisturized!  Try a cleansing oil or cream which will hydrate your skin from step one!  Great products for dry skin contain emollients like vitamin e, shea butter and red algae.  Also, oil based serums are excellent for dry skin, especially in the cooler seasons.  To keep your skin glowing, a rich night cream and a moisturizing mask once per week is essential.

oily skin type

OILY

Oily skin has large visible pores and may have a tendency towards pore congestion and/or breakouts.  If your skin is oily, keep your products light!  Start with a foaming cleanser or gel to deeply clean your pores and follow with toner.  Try a peel based exfoliant containing Alpha (Aha) and Beta (BHa) Hydroxy acids.  AHAs and BHAs help to normalize oil production and keep skin clear.  They also aid in pore refinement and breakout prevention.  Try a clarifying serum layered under an oil free moisturizer.  Clay and charcoal masks are also great for detoxifying oily skin and keeping pores clean.

Sensitive skin type

SENSITIVE

Sensitive skin requires delicate treatment because it is “sensitive”  to external and internal factors, such as product ingredients, hot and cold temperatures, food, alcohol and stress.  Look for products that strengthen sensitive skin, and avoid potential triggers such as added dyes, fragrances and parabens by choosing clean beauty products.  Soothing botanicals like cucumbers, roses and green tea, which help to calm the skin and reduce redness and irritation, are excellent choices.  A skincare professional can guide you to the correct products if you are unsure.

combination skin type

COMBINATION

Combination skin means varied pore size.  Like oily skin types, your products should be light, but your skin will require more hydration.  Combo skin can often benefit from alternating cleansers, a foam one day and cleansing milk or oil the next.  Combo skin likes exfoliation and peels are great to help your skin stay balanced.  A hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid is ideal paired with either oil free moisturizer or an emulsion.  If you have a tendency toward dehydration you will probably need a medium weight moisturizer in the fall/winter.  Combo skin is all about balance so you may have to play around a little with layers and textures.  If you are acne prone stick with oil free products.

Aging skin type

MATURE

Mature skin can be any type but usually has less oil production.  Make sure to keep your skin well moisturized!  Typically cleansing oils, balms and creams are ideal for mature skin but you should keep your skin type in mind.  Acid or enzyme based exfoliation has many benefits such as keeping the skin firm, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and lightening sun damage.  For a strong anti-aging skincare routine, incorporate ingredients like peptides to build collagen and antioxidants to prevent and correct free radical damage.  Vitamin c is great for mature skin because it both firms and brightens, as well as b vitamins for healthy strong skin.  Products containing these high level ingredients tend to be more pricey due to technology in the product such as advanced delivery system and plumping spheres and worth the investment.
